Acupuncture began more than 2000 years ago in China. Medical acupuncture began gaining popularity in North America in the 1970’s. The basic idea behind the need for acupuncture is that once the an individuals energy flow in one of the bodies 12 main meridians has been altered or disrupted disease or pain can form. The goal of Acupuncture is correct this disruption by inserting needles through the skin at points along the affected meridian. The needles stimulate the effected nerves and/or cause the release of chemicals (such as endorphins) which help to relieve pain.
